Our Journey towards Inclusion

Inclusive education is about including all the children, celebrating their unique talents and making a commitment to do whatever it takes to provide every child a right to belong, not to be excluded.

Little Angels Inclusive School was started as a Special School with 46 students in 2011. Gradually, in a short time frame, an integrated set up was initiated.

Integrating children with special needs into mainstream classrooms promotes a more inclusive society. It is very important for developing an empathetic, wellrounded society. So, mainstreaming was initiated so that children with special needs develop self-esteem and learn better social skills. Active involvements in extracurricular activities, where children with special needs join regular students, peer support and specialized interventions, involve the entire school community working as a team. It is vital to nurture children with special needs in a supportive environment, for they are society's future contributing members.

The newfangled Inclusive School with all the latest and modern equipment and special therapy facilities was inaugurated by the former Miss Universe and Social activist Ms Sushmita Sen on 30th September 2015.

The infrastructure of Little Angels Inclusive School has been designed keeping in mind all the requirements of a barrier free environment for differently abled individuals. For ease of use, a ramp and sensor doors have been installed near the entry and color-coded lines have been installed across the ceiling beneath the passage to direct students from room to room according to color patterns. The floor has been provided with a tactile flooring to aid the visually impaired students in their movements inside the building. Washrooms have also been designed in a particular way to make sure they are easily accessible to all the students. Every block of the building has lifts and the entire building is centrally air conditioned. Classrooms have been provided with modified seating arrangements, keeping in mind the comfort and convenience of the students. Specially designed chairs have been made to ensure the comfort, safety and easy movement of students with physical limitations. Separate cabins for one–on–one interaction have been designed for the hyperactive students (who easily get distracted, face difficulty to concentrate and show typical behavior like restlessness, fidgeting) to reduce distractions and help them concentrate.

Turning Inclusion from concept to reality

"Inclusion is based on the belief that students of all abilities have the right to an education that is meaningful, appropriate and equivalent to that of their peers."

At Little Angels School, the students with mild to borderline intellectual functioning are given exposure to mainstream syllabus within the Inclusive School. Gradually, when they become comfortable following it, they are shifted to the mainstream classroom initially with one subject and under the constant supervision of the special educator. With time as the students gain confidence, the number of subjects is increased with the mainstream classes. Mainstream educators are also being provided with regular training to become more adept at handling special children. We understand that peer learning leaves a farreaching impact. Therefore, the school timings are managed in such a way that the students attending the mainstream classes are given the benefit of an hour of interaction with special educators where they can help the students in their areas of difficulty on a regular basis.
